What's Available
Elgin has four storage facilities, but the mix is a little unusual. There are no covered spots, so your choices are indoor or outdoor. One facility offers indoor storage, which is the best bet if you want to keep sun and hail off your rig. The other three are outdoor, either open lots or fenced yards. Two of the four have 24-hour gate access, so you can get in and out on your own schedule. The average rating across all four is 4.7, which is solid for a small town. Two of the top facilities are Public Storage locations with 4.9 stars and hundreds of reviews. Storage Wise of Elgin is smaller, with just a handful of reviews, and Rogers Storage also serves the area. If you need covered storage, you'll have to look outside Elgin. The nearby listings add another twelve options, but the same rule applies: check what type of cover the spot actually has before you commit.
Indoor vs Outdoor
Indoor storage is the safer choice for long-term parking. It keeps UV rays, rain, and hail off the roof and sides, which matters more than people think. Sun breaks down seals and fades gel coat. Hail can crack vents and skylights. But indoor spots are limited here, with only one facility offering them, so expect competition. Outdoor storage is more common, and if you go that route, a quality cover and regular washing go a long way. Check the lot for drainage and shade. Two facilities have 24-hour access, which is handy if you like to leave early or return late. Just confirm gate hours in writing. For any storage type, ask about insurance requirements and whether the facility requires proof of coverage. That's standard practice and protects you both.
What It Costs
Prices in Elgin are not published in this data, so you'll need to call around. Outdoor spots are usually the cheapest, indoor the most expensive. Two Public Storage locations dominate the ratings, but they may not be the cheapest. Storage Wise has far fewer reviews, so its 4.3 rating is less reliable. Rogers Storage has no rating yet. That's not a red flag, just a lack of data. Get quotes from all four and compare what's included. Some facilities charge extra for 24-hour access, others bundle it. Ask about any admin fee, deposit, or long-term contract. And if you're storing over winter, a battery maintainer is worth the small cost. It keeps your house batteries from draining while the rig sits.
