What to expect from outdoor storage
Outdoor storage means your rig sits on pavement or gravel without a roof overhead. That works for many owners, but Michigan sun and UV will wear on tires, decals, and covers over time. A quality cover helps, and so does parking with the sun's arc in mind if you have a choice. Four of the 7 outdoor facilities here offer 24/7 gate access, so check gate hours before you commit. The average rating across these facilities is 4.3, based on renter reviews. Pirates Cove Storage Ann Arbor leads with a 4.8 rating from 131 reviews, followed by CubeSmart Self Storage and Public Storage, both at 4.6.
Covered and indoor options
If you want more protection than open air, 5 facilities offer covered storage and 4 offer indoor spots. Public Storage and Devon Self Storage Ann Arbor both provide covered, indoor, and outdoor choices, which gives you flexibility if your needs change. Covered storage shields your roof and AC unit from direct sun and hail, while indoor storage keeps your rig out of the elements entirely. Indoor spots tend to fill up, so ask about availability early. Devon Self Storage has 399 reviews, the most of any facility listed here, and a 4.5 rating. The Storage Chest also offers covered and outdoor spots at 4.6 stars.
Features that matter
Gated access and cameras show up at several facilities, including CubeSmart Self Storage and Devon Self Storage Ann Arbor. Climate control is listed at four facilities, though for an RV that usually applies to indoor storage areas rather than the rig itself. If you store indoors, a battery maintainer is worth the small cost, and it helps to check on the rig monthly. Boat storage is listed at Pirates Cove, Public Storage, Devon, and Inn Storage, so if you tow a boat, those are worth a call. Six additional facilities are near Ann Arbor if you widen your search. Always confirm gate hours and insurance requirements before signing.
